“Small” Projects Can Grow

This game was created for the Godot Wild Jam #81, Expedition. We took part in jam #80, and weren’t sure if we wanted to do another so soon. We are working on turning our previous jam submission into a more complete game, and want to focus on that. Our plan had been to see what the theme was, and if we could come up with a simple idea that we could do in 2-3 days, we’d do it. We thought we’d come up with something we could do quickly. We were wrong. While we did pass by a number of ideas as feature creep, we still let too many get in. We also ran into web export performance issues that took a couple extra days to work out. The small side project quickly became our main focus, and took up a lot more time than planned.
While this took more of our time and focus than we had intended, it was still a good experience. We have only been doing full-time game dev for less than 2 months, and have a lot to learn. The web export issues we ran into here are bound to come up again in the future, and working them out in a smaller project like this is easier than if we’d made something big before learning about these issues. We will keep this in mind as we work on future projects and be sure to implement the things we learned here earlier in the design process, rather than having to go back and make changes later. Some of the logic developed for this game will likely be reused in future projects. After the last jam we added input remapping to that game, which gave us the knowledge to add it to this submission. We were also able to test it in a different project and refine what we had previously created.
Overall, this jam was good for us. We enjoyed creating the game, and learned from it. We have several larger games we’d like to like to make, so can’t really spend 1-2 weeks out of every month on game jams. Still, we will probably keep doing jams from time to time, especially if we can come up with smaller projects for them. Doing these jams is certainly going to make our other projects better.
Thanks for reading this and playing our game!
