Post Jam Update

There was a lot we wanted to get done for our submission, but did not finish in time. This was our first jam since starting to do development full time, and we ended up with an idea that involved a lot of new things for us. While we are happy with how our submission turned out, there is still more to do. We have continued to work on it, when not playing the other jam games.

The biggest change for this release is the addition of a tutorial level. It will teach you the basics. There is still more to the game, but it will get you started. We will be adding additional tutorial levels in the future, as well as expanding it to include the shop and inventory. The first level will also include a note recommending how much fencing to bring. The shop has a note mentioning that you buy fencing wire on spools of 50.

In addition to the new tutorial, we have tried to simplify things a bit. The number of foods has been reduced from 10 to 5, and they have been rebalanced. This should make it easier to experiment to see what each animal likes best. With the reduction, we have been able to fit more onto a single page removing the need for tabs in the shop.

This update also adds in initial mobile support. We have not spent as much time testing on mobile, and it will likely need some tweaking, but it is playable. The mobile on-screen controls can be toggled in the Settings. We currently have both text and icon based buttons.

Speaking of Settings, we have updated them to include more options. The biggest change here is the addition of remapping the input. You should now be able to play with controls that work best for you. We also separated out the animal sounds from the UI SFX on the volume controls. We like to offer as many options as we can so you can play how best suits you. The options available will grow as the game does.

Gameplay has also received some updates, beyond the rebalancing of foods. It now takes time to build a fence. It is pretty quick, but you will be unable to move while the fence is being built. Animals can still break the fence until it is finished. The fence post will be placed right away, and remain if the fence is broken. You can reuse it or remove it. Removing fence posts is a new ability. You can only remove them if they are not connected to any fences, and only when you are not connected. While you are moving into position to build a fence, the fence will now be semi-transparent to distinguish it from other built fences. You can see your progress in building the fence as it changes to black.

When brainstorming ideas for the jam we did not know what we’d end up with. Much of the feedback we have received so far has been that people are having fun with it. We feel that we have a good base here and plan to expand it. This was created as a jam game with a limited timeline, and some corners were cut. We will be taking a step back now and working to clean things up to create a better foundation for a full game. We will leave this post-jam demo up for now while we work to expand the game into something bigger. We may release bug fixes if anything big comes up. Feedback is welcome and appreciated. Let us know if there is anything you really like, or would like to see added.

Thank you for playing our demo!
